18th Century Carved Wood Royal Coat of Arms
Circa 1750
An outstanding 18th century carved limewood and giltwood Royal Coat of Arms. Finely carved acanthus leaves surround the lion and the unicorn which flank a crown and an oval shield. The motto in French, of English monarchs, Dieu et mon Driot (God and my Right) the Order’s motto Honi soit qui mal y pense (shame on him who thinks evil).

Made during the reign of either King George I, King George II or King George III

Royal Coats of Arms during the period 1707-1801 when, on the creation of the Union in 1707 during the reign of Queen Anne, the arms of the electorate of Hanover (which was not unified with the other realms and territories of George III) were removed from the fourth quarter and placed in an escutcheon of presence overall. At the same time the anachronistic claim to be King of France was at last abandoned and the use of the Fleurs-de-Lis in the second quarter was discontinued from 1801.

Based on the heraldry alone it could date as early as 1714 and as late as 1801.
