18th century Italian Desk
Circa 1760
Italian Mid-18th century
A small polychrome rectangular freestanding one-piece kneehole desk.
Made in Piedmont North West Italy under the French Regence influence.
The desk is raised on eight tapering short legs on block feet. The central
drawer is flanked by a pair of cupboard doors, above them is a brushing slide.
The fine decoration is executed on a pine carcass throughout. Circa 1750-60

Label inside the central drawer. No t.54 in the Catalogue of C. H. St J. Hornby.
Charles Harold Hornby 1867 -1946, was founding partner of W.H. Smith, He
founded Ashendene Press in 1895 until 1935. Deputy vice-chairman of the
NSPCC. In 1945 his collection was sold by Henry Duke & Son of Dorchester.
Some of his collection of antiques are now in the Victoria & Albert Museum
