18th century mahogany linen press

Exhibition Piece
18th century mahogany linen press
Circa 1760
An outstanding 18th century mahogany linen press. The whole is of exeptional quality following all the fine detailing on articles made during the Thomas Chippendale period. The carved cornice with blind fret-work decoration follows typical designs found in The Gentleman's & Cabinet Makers Director, first published in 1754. The upper cupboard section has two doors having four carved corners with stylised honeysuckle motif which is separated by a shaped and finely carved moulding. The interior has four oak lined trays with cedarwood fronts. The low waisted base has a carved top edge, three long gradated cock-beaded drawers, with book-matched veneered drawer fronts with superb gilt metal handles. The whole is raised and supported on the original carved shaped ogee bracket feet.
English, circa 1760
