18th century Cockpen Armchair
Circa 1760
A single Chippendale period mahogany trellis back mahogany armchair. Saddle shaped seat. This design of chair is often known as 'Cockpen'. Scottish circa 1760
There is an almost identical example illustrated in 'The Dictionary of English Furniture' by Ralph Edwards (second revised edition 1954) Page 285. Figure 188.
It is believed these chairs were made in James Hamilton's workshop who was based in Edinburgh. He referred to them as 'Chinese Chairs'
