19th century inlaid teapoy

19th century inlaid teapoy
Circa 1835
19th century teapoy of the finest quality attributed to Edward Holmes Baldock, a prominent furniture maker and dealer to the Royal Family. He was first listed in the London trade directories in 1805. That listing had him operating out of No.7 Hanway Street in London, where he was described as selling ""china and glass"". An updated listing in 1821 described his business as ""an antique furniture and ornamental furniture dealer"", and in 1826 as a buyer and seller of ""china, cabinets, screens, bronzes etc"".
Between 1832 and 1837 he sold earthenware and glass products to William IV, and upon the ascendancy of Queen Victoria in 1837, sold china until his death in 1845.

Baldock was one of the first known antique dealers.

This table has inlays of satinwood, harewood, ivory, tulipwood, purplehart, ebony and brass. The cartouches around the body represent military, love, music, and harvest. The coat of arms surmounted by a coronet and eagle above The motto; FIDE ET CONSTANTIA (Faith and Courage) The satinwood interior incorporates a pair of oval harewood caddies and glass blending bowls.
Four C-scrolls support a central lobed and lappet clasped column terminating on a flared concave inlaid base with scroll feet and recessed castors.
The interior of this piece retains the wonderful original colour of the satinwood.
An identical shield, crest and motto is also recorded in Dublin in 1816.
