17th century long case clock by Daniel Quare

£85,000.00

Daniel Quare (c.1649-1724)

An exceptional burr walnut month-going longcase clock. The burr walnut case has a well-proportioned hood with foliate pierced walnut fret. Three brass ball finials, glazed sides panels. The long rectangular trunk door is veneered in burr walnut with superb figuring and colour, herringbone banding and cross grain edge mouldings. The lower section also has fine veneers and crossbandings.

The 12-inch square brass dial is signed Daniel Quare, London on the silvered chapter ring which has Roman hour numerals. The month going movement is of his finest quality. Constructed typically throughout with five knopped pillars, all ring turned in the distinctive pattern used by him. Brass-cased lead weights also appear to be original. Quare became one of the most illustrious clockmakers in England and considered to be one of the top makers of the ‘golden age’.

In 1708 Quare became Master of the Clockmakers Company.

A year-duration burr walnut longcase clock made for William III can still be seen at Hampton Court.
